St. Louis Brass Quintet in Concert Series, Feb. 3
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University's Lecture-Concert Series will feature the St. Louis Brass Quintet Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Riceland Hall of Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Dr.
Admission is free to all events in the Lecture-Concert Series. This presentation is supported in part by an award from Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, Arkansas Arts Council, and foundations, corporations and individuals throughout Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.
“We are very proud to host the world-renowned St. Louis Brass Quintet on the A-State campus," according to Dr. Ed Owen, professor of music. "This spectacular chamber ensemble has been together since the 1970s and features five of the top brass performers and pedagogues in the world."
The quintet also will present a masterclass/clinic earlier in the day at 4 p.m. in Riceland Hall.
Founded in 1964, the Saint Louis Brass Quintet is one of America's longest standing brass quintets. The group was originally formed by members of the St. Louis Symphony to play children's concerts around the St. Louis area.
Soon they expanded to present full-length concerts with funding support from major arts organizations.
Now, 40 years and more than 2,500 engagements later, the only original member still in the group and the only one who actually lives in St. Louis is trombonist Melvyn Jernigan. The other quintet members hold top positions across the United States.
The group now performs three 10-day concert tours throughout the United States each year, along with recording and international touring.
"A-State students will be able to experience brass performance at its finest," Owen added. "I have heard the St. Louis Brass Quintet on numerous occasions and I can personally attest to their artistry and musicianship. This is a concert that can be enjoyed by all ages.”
