Student receives Lillian Barton Scholarship
JONESBORO, AR – Kelsey Lane Gage, a senior from Heber Springs, is the recipient of the Lillian Barton Scholarship at Arkansas State University for the fall semester, announced Dr. Mary Jane Bradley, director of the Professional Education Programs and Scholarship Chair.
Gage’s field of study is early childhood education and she owns a 3.939 grade point average. She has been a member of Chancellor’s List since she enrolled at Arkansas State. Gage was recently inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education. Persons who exhibit the ideals of scholarship, high personal standards, and promise in teaching and allied professions may be elected to membership.
She plans to graduate a year early in December 2013 with a bachelor of science in education degree in early childhood education. Her plans are to teach for a brief period and then begin work on her master’s degree. Ultimately, she hopes to teach at the university level.
Gage is the daughter of Donald Gage and the late Barbara Gage.
The Lillian Barton Scholarship is named in honor of a special educator who rendered service to the teaching profession for more than 50 years. She was a public school teacher, school administrator, and teacher educator. The scholarships are financed by an endowment established by donations from relatives of Miss Barton, friends and organizations. The interest from the endowment provides scholarships for deserving teacher education majors.
The recipients are selected through the following criteria: must be a student at ASU-Jonesboro; students must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program; must be pursuing the BSE or MSE degree and must have an overall grade point average of 3.00 or above. The scholarship is awarded in the fall and spring semesters.
