Students Present STEM Posters at the Capitol
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University was well-represented at “STEM Posters at the Capitol” recently in Little Rock. The annual event provides an opportunity for undergraduate students from universities around the state to showcase their research in the STEM disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — at the State Capitol.
Eleven A-State students were involved with five poster presentations. Afterward, they enjoyed lunch at the Arkansas State University System Office as guests of Dr. Charles Welch, president.
The participating students were Izzeldin Ahmed, Brendan Crutchfield, Claire Greene, Jacob Oster, Landon Perdue, Mason Rhodes, Hannah Seats, Tim Wakefield, Alexx Weaver, Benjamin Whitfield and Katy Willis.
Faculty mentors for the projects are Dr. Maureen Dolan, associate professor of molecular biology, Dr. Robert (Drew) Fleming, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, Dr. Shubhalaxmi Kher, professor of electrical engineering, and Dr. Fabricio Medina-Bolivar, professor of plant metabolic engineering. Also, Dr. Grover P. Miller of UAMS was a faculty mentor.
Dr. Tom Risch and Kari Harris, representing the Office of Research and Technology Transfer, and Shea Harris, representing Arkansas Biosciences Institute, also attended.
Hannah Seats (left) and Landon Perdue explain research into waxworms as a plastic waste management solution. NASA carried an experiment prepared by the A-State SPOCS team to the International Space Station last summer.
Alexx Weaver explains her triple-negative breast cancer cell treatment research to Landen Crancer, assistant vice president of finance and operations in the ASU System Office.
Izzeldin Ahmed (right) explains his research into drug interactions between Xanax and synthetic cannabinoids to Landen Crancer (left) and Dr. Tom Risch, vice provost for research and technology transfer and executive director of Arkansas Biosciences Institute at A-State.
