Summer Camp Academy continues throughout July
JONESBORO — Various educational and fun events are scheduled throughout the month of July in continuance of Arkansas State University’s Summer Camp Academy.
Two “Super Hero Training” camps are set for Monday through Friday, July 18-22. Boys and girls in Pre-K to the third grade can participate from 8 a.m.-noon to train and work on super hero powers. The students will develop their own super hero names, make costumes and learn about real life heroes.
Students entering fourth through eighth grades can attend the 1-5 p.m. session that is super hero training with a technology twist. In addition to receiving the same training as the morning session, campers can create characters electronically with new technology options.
The Summer Camp Academy closes out the summer series, Monday-Friday, July 25-29, with two “Kids Cook Café” sessions. From 8 a.m.-noon, students in Pre-K through the third grade will learn to take charge and cook for the family, while the 1-5 p.m. session is open to fourth-eighth graders.
Both groups will receive a chef’s apron and learn how to make snacks and try new recipes as chefs of their own cafés. This camp can be repeated from previous summers with new recipes, themes and camp leaders to ensure a quality experience. Both Kids Cook Café camps will be held at the Jonesboro Public School District Mathematics and Science School.
A unique opportunity for students in this camp will be a guest appearance by 11-year-old Riley Jane Mitchell, who competed in New York on the Food Network television show “Chopped Junior.” She will appear in both the morning and afternoon camps. Her brother, Cole Mitchell, will also present the YouTube video he made of his sister that was submitted to Chopped Junior as a part of the preliminary competition. Karen Gott and Mike Mitchell of Jonesboro are the grandparents. Eric and Rachael Mitchell are the parents.
The A-State STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Summer Camp Academy that began May 31 is a scholarship program funded by a $50,000 grant providing camps for students from diverse backgrounds with interests in the STEM fields. Two weeks of technology afternoon sessions have been added to this schedule from 1-5 p.m. and will be held in the Educational Leadership Building. Enrollment is open for this camp and is based on diverse background and aptitude for STEM fields.
