Super Saturday Offers Wide Array of Activities for Students and Families
JONESBORO — With forecasts for perfect spring weather and a calendar chocked full of events, it’s a Super Saturday at Arkansas State University on April 23.
From plays and concerts to family-friendly events, there will be something for the entire A-State campus community and Northeast Arkansas on tap.
Among the highlights are the annual Spring Football Game at 2:15 p.m. at Centennial Bank Stadium and a pair of appearances at First National Bank Arena of the Hot Wheels Monster Truck Live Tour.
The day begins with a 5K run on campus, conducted by the communications disorders student organization, at 8 a.m.
A Jonesboro community favorite event begins at 10 a.m. on the A-State farm with the Bill & Alice Nix Spring Petting Zoo. This is one of two opportunities each year that the College of Agriculture opens up to allow youth to interact with animals and learn at the Teaching and Research Center to learn. Open to the public, the petting zoo runs until 2 p.m.
Families can also take advantage of the A-State Museum’s “Through a Child’s Eyes" art exhibition” on Saturday. It’s the 35th edition of the event, and the museum is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The first of two Saturday appearances of the Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live begins at 12:30 p.m. at FNB Arena. This is the first time for the epic Hot Wheels monster trucks to come to life in full-sized, kid-focused, immersive Hot Wheels experience. The second event on Saturday is at 7:30 p.m.
At 2 p.m. the A-State Theatre presents a matinee performance of "Head Over Heels" in the Drama Theatre of Fowler Center. A second performance is set for 7:30 p.m. Also at the Fowler Center during the day in the Bradbury Art Museum is the new exhibition of the Pardew Collection of International Art.
University Housing is sponsoring Spring Fling social events from noon until 3 p.m. for residents of Pack Place, The Circle and The Village.
The day closes with several academic events, including the 40th anniversary Honors Gala at Cooper Alumni Center at 7 p.m.
At 5 p.m., senior tenor Genghong Cai will perform his senior recital at 5 p.m. and senior Alec Black will conduct his senior oboe recital at 7:30 p.m. Both events are in the Fine Arts Center in the center of campus.
Also at 5 p.m., the United Voices Gospel Choir will conduct their Spring Worship Service in the Reng Student Union Auditorium.
The Red Wolves have a full schedule of events as well starting with second day of the lone home outdoor track and field event of the year, the Red Wolves Open. The two-day meet begins on Friday, April 22. Friday afternoon, field events begin at 3 p.m. with the women’s hammer and running events open at 5:45 p.m. with the men’s 200 meter.
On Saturday, field events begin with shot and discus at 10:30 a.m., and running events start at 10 a.m. with the men’s 5,000. The day concludes with the 4x400 relays starting at 4 p.m. All events are at the A-State Track Complex located on Red Wolf Trail in the A-State sports and intramural park off Marion Berry Boulevard. This is the community’s only chance to see the multiple-time Sun Belt Conference men’s and women’s track teams perform at home.
At 2:15, the Red Wolves football team conducts its Spring Football Game at Centennial Bank Stadium. Gates will open at 1 p.m., and there is no admission charge. All tailgate areas will be open, and the Hijinx Kids Zone will be set up in Halsey Thrasher Harpole Tailgate City on the west side of the stadium from 12-2 p.m. The activities will feature inflatables and outdoor games, and a balloon artist will also be performing.
Finally at 6 p.m., Red Wolves baseball hosts SBC foe Troy for the second game in a conference series at Tomlinson Field.
