08/25/2014

JONESBORO — A local business couple, Ted and Amanda Herget, have endowed a full scholarship for Arkansas State University’s College of Business through their local business, Gearhead Outfitters. This marks the first-ever full tuition scholarship in the College of Business.

“We received a very substantial gift from Ted and Amanda Herget that funds a scholarship for one of our College of Business students,” said dean of the College of Business Dr. Shane Hunt. “This will have an impact on our students and on generations of their families to come as it is a transformative gift for the College of Business.”

The first full-time Gearhead Outfitters scholarship will be awarded in the fall semester of 2015. To be eligible for the scholarship, the recipient must be a full-time junior or senior student in good academic standing. Criteria also includes submission of a full resume by the applicant, must be a College of Business major and must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. The award is good for one year. The recipient is selected by the College of Business Scholarship Committee in consultation with the Hergets.

The College of Business supports the departments of Accounting, Computer & Information Technology, Economics & Finance, Management & Marketing and the Delta Center for Economic Development that coordinates the economic development outreach services at A-State.

“It was a group effort, "said Ted Herget. “My staff and I are all Arkansas State graduates. It is a commitment by all of us. Not one person voted against it."

The Hergets have six Gearhead Outfitters business locations including the Cycle House on Main Street that includes bicycles sales, care and safety products and clothing. The other is located in Jonesboro’s Turtle Creek Mall. There are two locations in Little Rock, one in Rogers and one in Shreveport, La.

“Both my husband and I are Arkansas State graduates and we’re very proud of the education we received here,” Amanda noted. “We want to help someone else along. I did have to get student loans, and it would have been nice to have a full ride scholarship.”

Amanda earned a bachelor of science in education elementary education in 1999 and a master of science in elementary education in 2001, while Ted received a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1997.

“Our motto has been ‘you support the community and the community supports you,’” added Ted. “I’m a Jonesboro boy and the community has been good. To me, Arkansas State is as good as any university. We need these kids to stay here. Jonesboro is a great town and it takes young people to mold it.”

Dr. Hunt concluded, “What I appreciate so much is that the Hergets took the success they have and have given that back to help the next generation—the next Ted and Amanda—and that spirit of giving permeates what we are trying to do in the College of Business at Arkansas State.”
