The Rhythm Method String Quartet to Visit A-State
JONESBORO – The Student Composers Inc. chapter at Arkansas State University will present a concert by The Rhythm Method string quartet Friday, Feb. 7.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Center (GPS 2412 Quapaw Way). Admission is free.
Among the works to be performed will be "The Stretching Cycles of Years" by Timothy Crist, "Color of all Flesh" by Tye Crawford, "Spontaneous Luminescence" by Connor Scroggins, "Hollux Rey" by Leah Asher, "Signature" by Jodie Rottle, and "Then One Day" by Meaghan Burke.
Members of the group will spend time at Nettleton’s STEAM school, exploring the elements of music and discovering interdisciplinary connections in a STEAM school setting.
The quartet also will visit members of the gender and women's studies program Thursday, Feb. 6, at 4 p.m. in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, room 2018. All are welcome. The quartet will discuss their Hidden Mothers Project, an initiative highlighting works by historical women composers.
The Rhythm Method strives to reimagine the string quartet in a contemporary, feminist context. The four performer-composers of The Rhythm Method continually expand their sonic and expressive palette through the use of graphic notation, vocalization, improvisation and performance.
“The Rhythm Method is one of the most forward-looking string quartets in the world. Their music represents more fully a consilience of numerous disciplines, which makes the group perfect for interdisciplinary studies," according to Dr. Tim Crist, adviser to the SCI chapter. “Because of this unique quality, the quartet will be working with Nettleton STEAM faculty and students in designing musical works that have as their primary impulse aspects of science, math, physics, architecture, history, as well as other extramusical concepts, in an effort to find intersections that build deeper learning. This will make for a wonderful educational experience for our community students, and something unlike anything they have ever experienced.”
The group recently completed residencies at the Zurich University for Art and Music, and Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts. They have performed internationally in France, Austria and Switzerland.
This concert and residency are presented with additional funding support from the A-State Diversity and Community Engagement program.
