Theatre and Fowler Center to Host Lecture Blending Dance and History

JONESBORO – A dance education program will be featured at Arkansas State University.Dr. Madia Cooper-Ashirifi will lead the lecture “Africa to America: Roots of Social Dance,” on Monday, Sept. 18, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. in the Drama Theatre at Fowler Center, located at 201 Olympic Drive. 

Cooper-Ashirifi is a Liberian-American dance educator, artist, choreographer and scholar. She serves as an associate professor and chair of the department of dance at Brenau University of Gainesville, Ga. Dallas Martinez, director of Fowler Center, said all are welcome to immerse themselves in this community dance workshop and lecture.“We are super excited to have such an accomplished educator and artist come and share her wisdom and experience with our students. Truly a remarkable evening for everyone that plans to attend,” said Martinez.She also is a performer with Ghanaian dance company Mawre African Dance and Drum, whose dancers perform throughout the Southeast. She has taught multiple genres including African diaspora, modern, West African, Afro-funk and jazz.This event is free to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.
