04/28/2014

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s College of Education and Behavioral Science will welcome two of the foremost authorities on effective teaching, Drs. Harry and Rosemary Wong. They are both award-winning former classroom teachers who focus on improving education by supplying teachers with the proper management skills. The Wongs will be discussing effective classroom management at the A-State Convocation Center on Tuesday, May 6 at 8 a.m.

Harry Wong has authored more than 30 publications including one of the leading books in education, “The First Days of School,” with some 3.8 million copies sold worldwide. Wong’s many journal articles can be found in publications such as, “Educational Leadership,” “American School Board Journal” and “Education Week.” His techniques have been adapted by thousands of educators for success in their schools and classrooms.

According to his biography, Wong is a former secondary science teacher who developed methods that resulted in his having no discipline problems, a zero dropout rate, a 95 percent homework turn-in factor, and the ability to demonstrate mastery learning for each of his students. Because of his achievements, Wong was awarded the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award given by the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

Dr. Rick Hux, director of the Education Renewal Zone for the College of Education and Behavioral Science said, “We are very honored to be able to bring Drs. Harry and Rosemary Wong to Arkansas State University for the benefit of our pre-service teachers, faculty, and our public school educational community.  Dr. Harry Wong is one of the most motivational, exciting, and dynamic speakers on classroom management and student achievement today. He is affectionately known as ‘The Rock Star of Education.’ For 30 years, he has been a preeminent speaker in education and is just as relevant today as he was when I first heard him speak over 30 years ago.  For those that will hear him for the first time, I am confident it will be one of the most memorable, exciting, and fascinating experiences they will have in an educational professional development activity.”

Rosemary Wong is the CEO of Harry K. Wong publications and the co-author of “The First Days of School.” According to her biography, Wong is the driving force behind the development of the company’s educational books and tools aimed at improving the effectiveness of teachers. She has worked as an elementary teacher, and served as the media director and student activities director at a middle school. Wong was the first teacher selected as a mentor teacher in her school district.

Harry Wong has given some 3,500 presentations to more than a million people. His lectures have taken him to every American state, every Canadian province, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and Antarctica. His wife Rosemary now shares the stage with him as he travels the world helping teachers.  Together they were nominated for the Brock International Prize in Education and are the recognized leaders in the development of effective teachers.

Educators from throughout the state will be attending the event. Through the College of Education and Behavioral Science, A-State’s goal is to provide future teachers with essential skills while obtaining their degree and to assist them once they have entered the field. A-State is seeking to improve the future of education at all levels by being productively innovative through community outreach events such as the Wong’s presentation.

The mission of the College of Education and Behavioral Science is to generate and disseminate knowledge through teaching, research, and service and to apply that knowledge to improve education and the quality of life for all individuals in a pluralistic and democratic society. It is accomplished within student-centered, intellectually challenging environments with faculty and staff dedicated to excellence.
