Transfer Week Offers Scholarships for Community College Students

10/15/2018

JONESBORO – In celebration of National Transfer Student Week, Arkansas State University is offering a scholarship to each Arkansas community college and hosting a tailgate for students interested in completing their four-year degrees in Jonesboro.

“We have made it a priority that every student in our state and region knows that Arkansas State is ready to work with them to continue their educational journey after their two-year degree into a four-year degree with us,” Chancellor Kelly Damphousse said.  “Statistics show that transfer students have some of the best graduation and retention rates.  They are highly motivated and focused, and we want to make clear that we can be their next academic home.”

Participating in the annual Arkansas Community College conference in Little Rock on Monday, Oct. 15, and Tuesday, Oct. 16, A-State will award the top graduate from each Arkansas Community College the Academic All-Star Scholarship to attend A-State.

The 22 scholarships go to an outstanding student at each of the ACC, providing full tuition and fees for up to 15 hours of Arkansas State courses taken at A-State or through one of the A-State Degree Centers at Beebe, Mountain Home or Mid-South along with $1,500 per semester toward housing at A-State.  The scholarship is renewable for four consecutive semesters or the completion of the recipient’s undergraduate degree, providing the student maintain all scholarship requirements.

On Thursday, Oct. 18, A-State is hosting both System Night, welcoming all students, faculty and staff from ASU System member institutions to the Georgia State football game, and conducting Transfer Day with several other colleges in the region.

More than 1,300 students, family members, and faculty and staff from participating institutions have signed up to attend Transfer Day.

Designated by the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students, the 2018 National Transfer Student Week is Oct. 15-19, 2018.  Arkansas State is currently expanding opportunities for transfer students, and is celebrating the role of transfer students at the Jonesboro university.

A-State is working toward the goal of new articulation agreements with all in-state and Upper Delta region two-year institutions.  Earlier this fall, Arkansas State conducted signing day ceremonies with the four member institutions of the ASU System, and with Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Mo.  A-State officials have additional signing events set at University of Arkansas Community College in Batesville on Oct. 24 and at South Arkansas Community College in El Dorado on Nov. 14.  To see the colleges and universities partnering with A-State and a list of current articulation agreements, go to AState.edu/Transfer.

Busses from ASU-Beebe, ASU-Mountain Home and ASU Mid-South are bringing delegations of faculty, students and staff to the game to celebrate ASU System Night.  Due to their close proximity to Jonesboro, students, faculty and staff from ASU-Newport and its Jonesboro campus are driving on their own to the events.

In addition, students from other regional community colleges are invited to attend the game, including Black River Technical College, UA Community College in Batesville, East Arkansas Community College, Arkansas Northeastern College and Three Rivers College.

Among the activities planned for students currently at regional community colleges are an intramural flag football tournament, a special tailgate with the Chancellor, and tickets to the Red Wolves football game versus Georgia State.

The flag football tournament matches teams from ASU Mid-South, Arkansas Northeastern, East Arkansas, ASU-Mountain Home and two teams from Phillips Community College, one pairing with UA-Stuttgart and one from PCC’s Helena/West Helena campus.

The transfer tailgate starts at 4 p.m. and is located near the blue entrance (north side) of First National Bank Arena.  Campus tours to the A-State Welcome Center will run from 4:15 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Students at area colleges interested in transferring to Arkansas State can still register for tickets by going to AState.edu/TransferTailgate.
