University Community Mourns Passing of Dr. Dan Ross

JONESBORO -- The university community extends sympathy to the family, friends and associates of Dr. Dan Ross, emeritus professor of music, who died Wednesday morning.

Ross, who earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Arkansas State, completed his Ph.D. at the University of Mississippi.  He began teaching in the Department of Music at A-State in 1968, and taught the Double Reed Studio at A-State until his retirement in 2018.

For 24 years, Ross served as Principal Oboist with the Arkansas Symphony and he performed with the North Arkansas Symphony, Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, Nashville Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony and the St. Louis Chamber Music Society. He was a frequent soloist with the Forum Sinfonia of Krakow, Poland, and toured with the group in the United States and Europe. 

He invented and developed the Ross gouging machines which have been helping oboists make oboe reeds since 1984. Ross traveled the United States and Europe giving master classes at universities and at International Double Reed Society conventions.

His obituary and plans for visitation Tuesday, Nov. 19, and funeral Wednesday, Nov. 20, are online, with arrangements by Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
