Visiting Artist to Speak to Students, March 19
JONESBORO –Students in the College of Fine Arts will have an opportunity to hear a presentation on contemporary art by visiting artist Neil Callander.
Callander will present a gallery talk Thursday, March 19, at 3 p.m. in the Art Gallery of the Fine Arts Center. Callander's work is featured in an exhibition that continues in the gallery through March 20.
"Visiting artists such as Neil Callander enable students to see contemporary art live and in-person, an experience which is invaluable to any young artist concerned with the details of how work is crafted and created," commented John Harlan Norris, associate professor of art and coordinator for the gallery.
"This program also allows students to hear artists speak about their work as well as providing opportunities for one-on-one critiques that offer students a fresh perspective on their own developing bodies of work."
Callander, an assistant professor of art at Mississippi State University, was recently awarded a research grant to be a resident at the Gullkistan Residency for Creative People in Laugarvatn, Iceland. His work has been exhibited widely including solo exhibitions in New York, Ohio and Kentucky, and group exhibitions in Ohio, Alabama and Mississippi.
He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University and a Master of Fine Arts from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. In 2005 he received a full fellowship to be a summer resident at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
