Welcome Week 2019 Gets Underway, Opening Fall Semester
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University's Welcome Week activities get underway Saturday, with events scheduled through Friday, Aug. 23. Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 19.
The Student Activities Board has arranged most of the special events for new and returning students to enjoy as they start another semester. The Honors College also has scheduled several activities, with details on the Honors College Association website.
Here's a list of the major activities on the Welcome Week schedule:
Saturday, Aug. 17
Residence halls open for move-in day starting at 9 a.m.
Greek Life's National Panhellenic Council sororities will culminate its week of formal recruitment at 10:30 a.m. with its bid day presentation at Centennial Bank Stadium.
Following the Red Wolves football scrimmage at 6 p.m. in Centennial Bank Stadium, students will enjoy a "grill and chill tailgate" at the Red WOLF center, from 7 until 9 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 18
First-Year Convocation for all entering students will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the First National Bank Arena.
The "Welcome Back Luau," featuring a luau-style buffet dinner, starts at 6 p.m. on the Heritage Plaza lawn of the Reng Student Union, sponsored by Student Activities Board (SAB) and Residence Life.
Monday, Aug. 19
Classes begin, and SAB and the Dean of Students office offers a donuts and juice bar on the first floor of the Reng Student Union from 9 to 11 a.m.
The Multicultural Center in the Union is hosting a scavenger hunt and ice cream sundae bar from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The Student Activities Board and Wolflife Campus Ministry are sponsoring "water wars," on the Heritage Plaza lawn, 6-8 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 20
A "grab and go" lunch for non-traditional students is available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the non-traditional and veterans student lounge in the Union, sponsored by the Multicultural Center.
RecFest, which runs from 5 to 7 p.m., gives students an opportunity to learn about campus recreation opportunities, such as intramurals and group fitness classes, at the Red WOLF Center.
Students will wear their favorite sports team jersey for the "jock jams" silent disco party sponsored by SAB in Centennial Hall, starting at 9 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 21
From 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., the Community and Organization Fair will be at Heritage Plaza. Student organizations and local business and community representatives will set up on the lawn and surrounding area to interact with students. Table reservations must be made at the Leadership Center in the Reng Student Union.
Thursday, Aug. 22
Students interested in participating in Up 'til Dawn can learn about the fundraising program and enjoy frozen custard from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Memorial Arch.
The Interfraternity Council will conduct an interest meeting to familiarize prospects with Greek life and the membership process, starting at 6 p.m. in the Student Union auditorium.
The downtown block party for A-State students starts on Jonesboro's Main Street at 8 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 23
The Student Activities Board and the fraternities and sororities in the Greek life program will sponsor "aux cord wars" starting at 9 p.m. in Centennial Hall of the Student Union.
