Winter Jazz Blowout to be Held Tuesday, Feb. 16

JONESBORO – The Department of Music at Arkansas State University presents A-State Jazz Studies in the groups' “Winter Jazz Blowout” on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Fowler Center’s Riceland Hall, 201 Olympic Dr. Admission is free.

The performing ensembles will be the A-State Jazz Lab Band and the Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Carroll.  The program will consist of familiar great jazz classics and new pieces.

Jazz Lab will start the show with Andy Clausen’s swinging “Dark Side of the Blues.”  Second on the evening will be “Chronometry,” a Fred Strum challenge.  From Miles Davis’s famous “Second Quintet,” the band will play Tom O’Connor’s setting of the Wayne Shorter classic “Footprints.”  Closing the first half, Jazz Lab will evoke the ‘50’s funk with Lee Morgan’s “Sidewinder.”

Following a short intermission, Jazz Orchestra will open with Michael Medrick’s hip-hop take on George Gershwin’s “Blue Skies,” then premiere the Chris Clark trombone feature “Bone-vitation.”  The band will turn the tempo all the way up with the bebop anthem from the Adderley Brothers, “Gon Gong.” 

The night will conclude with the premiere of Huntertones trombonist Chris Ott’s latest arrangement for the band from their newest release, “Welcome to the Neighborhood.”
