WIRELESS INFORMATION
The wireless network at A-State is designed to be a mobility enabler, allowing students, faculty, and staff to connect their devices wirelessly most places on campus. It is our goal to cover all interior locations 100%. Please refer to the following for connection and support information. If you find areas that are lacking in coverage, please contact us. Also, if you have a good experience with the wireless network, please contact us as well. Positive feedback is very useful to us.
AstateSecure
AstateSecure is the recommended connection to Arkansas State University’s wireless network. Any device that can use WPA2-Enterprise connectivity methods can utilize this network. This includes Androids, PCs, Macs, and iDevices. It is a secure and convenient way to connect to AState’s wireless network. To connect, usually all you have to do is just point your device to AstateSecure, accept the certificate, and connect using your username and password. If you are having problems connecting to AstateSecure, please check the links below.
AstateGuest
AstateGuest is a password protected wireless network that is heavily restricted due to security issues. You should be able to do basic internet activities, but access to A-State’s internal networks will be severely limited. This connection is designed specifically for sponsored guests of the university. Faculty, staff, and students should NOT use this if their device is WPA2-Enterprise capable. This password may be requested through the ITS HelpDesk at 870-972-3933 or by contacting the Wireless Administrator at support@astate.edu. If you have a sponsored guest that needs elevated wireless privileges beyond what AstateGuest allows, please contact the Wireless Administrator at support@astate.edu.
AstateVisitor
In locations where our new wireless system has been installed, we have a new wireless network called AstateVisitor. This will eventually completely replace AstateGuest. Visitors to the campus should use this network where available. As we continue to upgrade the wireless network across campus, AstateVisitor will become the standard for guest access. It is highly recommended that Faculty, Staff, and Students do not use this network.
802.11a, ac, ax, g, and n
In all locations that have wireless, we currently support 802.11a, 802.11g, 2.4GHz 802.11n, and 5GHz 802.11n, and 802.11ac. In several areas, we also support the new 802.11ax. We recommend that you use 802.11ax if possible. We currently do not support the older 802.11b wireless standard.
NEVER connect to a wireless network that is not one of the three above SSIDs. These wireless networks are of unknown origin and could contain serious privacy and security risks to users. The only exception to this is if you are in a residence building that has been upgraded. If that is the case, you can also use AstateResDevices.
Also, please remember that it is against A-State networking policies to install personal wireless access points anywhere on campus. These unauthorized access points can interfere with A-State’s wireless network and cause security issues as well.
We have gotten several reports of people having disconnection and instability issues. Many of these problems have been fixed by simply updating the drivers for the problematic wireless clients. If you are having these problems, please consult the webpage of your wireless client’s manufacturer for driver downloads.
