Biography
Dr. David Kern is the McAdams Frierson Chair of Bank Management, Associate Professor of Finance, and the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative at Arkansas State University.
David graduated from Muscle Shoals High School in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He continued his education at the University of North Alabama, earning a BS in Finance and Economics and a Master of Business Administration. He completed a Master of Science in Business Administration in Finance and his Ph.D. in Business Administration in Finance at Mississippi State University in 2004. His research interest is in the field of commercial banks. The title of his dissertation was "Asset Liability Management Practices of Community Banks relative to Large Banks: Implication for the Future Viability of Commercial Banks.
David graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at Louisianna State University and the Commercial Lending School through Tennessee Bankers.
He enjoyed working as a lender in the banking industry for ten years before starting an academic career. He is now honored and appreciates the opportunity to teach finance and banking classes and share experiences he learned while working for a commercial bank. The College of Business recognized David by awarding him the College of Business Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014, the Excellence in Service award in 2017, and the Department of Economics and Finance Outstanding Professor award in 2022.
David continues to be active in the Commercial Banking community. He has served on the faculties of Barret Banking School since 2009 and Southeastern School of Banking Since 2018. Since 2007, David has served as a Mock Board Member for the Commissioned Examiners Test through the Arkansas State Bank Department. He is a current Board Member of the Society of Business, Industry, and Economics and a past President.
His favorite activities include spending time with his wife, Carol, and their son Jay. He also enjoys playing golf, volunteer coaching, watching his son play sports, and attending sporting events.
